By Erin Healy
PrimeTime editor

PrimeTime Cape Cod is now ten years young. To mark this milestone, we did what many people do when a birthday starts with a "big" and ends with an "O." We took a hard look at ourselves, reassessed our priorities, and celebrated with a makeover.

Sure, we look good, but it's the changes we've made inside that count.

When the Cape Cod Times launched PrimeTime Cape Cod, the goal was to create a magazine for active and involved Cape Codders over 50. And we knew advertisers wanted an audience with people old enough to have money, and young enough to spend it. So we built it, and they came.

Over the years, our readers aged - and so did we.

Meanwhile, a new generation began crossing the 50-year threshold. We nodded in their direction, but kept right on talking to our old friends. We were perceived as a magazine for old people. That didn't mean we were wise and revered; it meant we were tired.

Eventually, it became clear that we needed to return to our original mission and stay on the cusp of the big 5-O. Today that means making a magazine that baby boomers can appreciate. Ten years from now it'll mean exploring how gen-Xers define 50.

We do our homework and we know what the first wave of baby boomers on Cape Cod are about. We represent a wide range of the boomer spectrum ourselves. We understand what it's like to leave a high-pressure, high-pay job in the city to piece together a livelihood here. We know what it's like to live here all your life and be able to start your own business. We know why people are drawn to the ocean when they're rebuilding from a loss or illness. We know how hard it is to make new friends. We, too, get itchy to get outside and do something physical.

We're know what it means to do life differently: Our empty nests aren't the same as our parents'; Men and women demand more from relationships today. At the same age, some of us are grandparents and some are starting families. We know how good we feel when we make a connection in the community, when we give of ourselves. We also know that life is short, and fun is not a luxury.

All of this will be reflected in the pages of the new PrimeTime Cape Cod. And so will Cape Cod. Our content is now 100 percent local.
